Levels of Interaction (LoI): A Model for Scaffolding Learner Engagement in an Immersive Environment
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we present a theoretical framework describing an original method for the design of intelligent tutoring environments, building upon the notion of shared attention to scaffold learner engagement. This framework, defined as the Levels of Interaction (LoI) approach, places a focus upon using techniques derived from leisure and serious games in order to foster engagement with the learner. As such, it targets applications wherein the learner/player is immersed in a 3D virtual environment, interacting and exchanging knowledge with an adaptive crowd of conversational agents. The paper describes how approaches based on the LoI paradigm are well suited to application areas such as history and cultural heritage, through a study of the requirements and perspectives of this framework within the context of a virtual model of the ancient city of Rome. Towards a more comprehensive implementation, we also discuss a summary of techniques from Computer Graphics and AI which are prerequisites for maintaining a high level of engagement, and explore how they can be merged inside a consumer PC game.

Learner Engagement with Structuring and Problematizing in Scaffolded Writing Tasks: A Mixed-MethodsMultiple Case Study
The present study set out to delineate to what extentfive intermediate learners engaged in structuring and problematizing scaffolding in two writing tasks. The study aimed at illuminating how the participants engaged with structuring and problematizing scaffolds cognitively, behaviorally, and affectively. Learners’ written essays, think-aloud protocols, and interviews shaped the data sources w...
متن کاملInterface between L2 learners’ pragmatic performance, language proficiency, and individual/group ZPD
One of the theories accounting for pragmatic development of L2 learners is Vygotsky’s (1978) sociocultural theory. This study investigated the development of EFL learners' pragmatic competence through the lens of an important concept of Vygotsky’s theory, i.e. the zone of proximal development. The study was conducted to answer two questions. The first question was wheth...
متن کاملScaffolding: A way for supporting learners in e-learning environments
Introduction: One of the effective ways to help learners improve their learning in learning environments is scaffolding. Scaffolding can be defined as teachers, other learners and resources support of learner on tasks that can’t be done alone. Experts strongly demand scaffolding to be used to help learners on abstractive and complex issues. The aim of this study is to examine the scaffoldi...
متن کاملLearner immersion engagement in the 3D virtual world: principles emerging from the DELVE project
This paper investigates the issues surrounding the use of 3D virtual worlds to enhance learner immersion through improved learner engagement. It is based on findings from the JISC-funded DEsign of Learning spaces in 3D Virtual Environments (DELVE) project at the University of Nottingham and the Open University. Given continued confusion about the term immersion, what it means for a learner to b...
متن کاملLearners’ Engagement in Meaning Negotiation and Classroom Interaction as a Function of Their Perceptions of Teachers’ Instructional Communicative Behaviors
A significant share of classroom interaction occurs between teachers and language learners. Therefore, the individual characteristics of teachers could play facilitative or impeding roles thus encouraging or discouraging learners from getting engaged in interaction and meaning negotiation attempts when interacting with their teachers. Surprisingly however, this area has attracted scant attentio...
